The North Pacific before Bering and Cook. Until the explorations of Vitus Bering (The Danish explorer in Russian Service) in 1728 and 1741, and James Cook in 1778, the relationship of the Asian and American continents was completely unknown. This map shows a characteristic representation of 17th-Century cartography, with Asia and America separated by a double strait running around a cast (and imaginary) island called Jesso or Jedso.
